What this site is for

The site brings together a practical introduction to hospital activation, operational readiness and transition, and an annotated library of published guidance, toolkits and project examples from around the world.

It is written for hospital executives, programme directors, clinical leaders, estates teams, healthcare developers and anyone else involved in bringing a new facility into use. It is independent and is not affiliated with any of the organisations it links to.

How the guide and library are prepared

  • Resources were reviewed in September 2026. Links go to the publishing organisation’s own pages wherever possible.
  • Every case study and project example names its source — the organisation that published it — and links to the original.
  • Linked organisations are independent of this website. Inclusion does not imply endorsement, and no linked organisation has endorsed this site.
  • The guide supports project discussion. It does not replace project-specific technical or clinical assurance, and its questions are not a safety assessment or certification tool.
  • Where guidance applies only to England, it is identified as such.
  • Photographs and drawings on this site are illustrative images, not pictures of real projects, staff or patients.

What is included

The library focuses on material that other project teams can use:

  • published guidance, toolkits and lessons-learned reports;
  • public accounts of hospital openings, moves and post-opening reviews, credited to their original source;
  • resources from the UK and internationally, with their geographic scope made clear.

Material is included only when it is publicly available and its source can be cited.
